School Administrators, Teachers and Authorities face a hard time trying to maintain the school chemistry lab. Here is the ultimate guide to running your school chemistry lab smoothly. Keep reading for cleaning, repair and safety guidelines.

How to Maintain the School Chemistry Lab Equipment?

maintain school chemistry lab equipment

Each piece of equipment in the chemistry lab needs to be maintained properly:

Glassware

  1. Beaker – A simple container for mixing, stirring, and heating chemicals. Store glass beakers after rinsing with soap and water in the lower rack of a cabinet with glass doors. This prevents dust from falling into the beaker that can disrupt experiments.
  2. Conical Flask (Erlenmeyer Flask) – Used for mixing and heating solutions with reduced risk of spills. Store and clean flasks like beakers.
  3. Test Tubes – Small glass tubes used for holding, mixing, and heating substances. Store them in boxes with holders. Always keep the boxes in a well-ventilated closed place after cleaning, like a glass door almirah or cupboard.
Storage cabinets for chemistry lab apparatus
  1. Test Tube Holder – A clamp used to hold test tubes during heating. Keep ample holders in the lab, so that all students have enough holders to use during experiments. If enough holders aren’t there, students resort to hacks like using paper holders as a makeshift or using the test tube as is during heating. This is very risky, because the paper can catch fire, or the reagents in the tube can boil out, harming the student. Hence, test tube holders are a must for every school chemistry lab.
  2. Measuring Cylinder (Graduated Cylinder) – Used to measure liquid volumes accurately. Store them along with glassware, ensure dust and humidity does not affect the equipment.
  3. Watch Glass – A concave glass used for evaporating small amounts of liquid or covering beakers. Store like other glassware.

Additional Equipment

  1. Bunsen Burner – A gas burner used for heating substances. Teach students to stop the gas supply after use. Ensure it is closed after experiments and beware of gas leaks.
  2. Wire Gauze – A mesh placed over a tripod stand to distribute heat evenly.
  3. Crucible and Lid – A heat-resistant container for high-temperature heating. Prone to breakage upon falling, must be handled carefully.
  4. Evaporating Dish – Used to evaporate liquids and concentrate solutions.
  5. Pipette – A tool for transferring precise amounts of liquid. Each student should be assigned a separate pipette for titration experiments. Mouth pipettes are unhygienic to share.
  6. Burette – A long graduated tube used in titration to measure liquid volume precisely. Teach students to handle the burette carefully. The long burette is often broken by students during handling. Fill the burette by keeping the burette and stand setup on the ground. Then place it on the benchtop to perform titration drop by drop.
  7. Dropper – A small tool for adding liquid dropwise.
  8. Glass Stirring Rod – Used for stirring solutions manually. Replace broken or cracked glass rods as they can cause injury.
  9. Funnel – Used for transferring liquids and filtering mixtures.
  10. Filter Paper – A porous paper used to separate solids from liquids. Keep them inside packed boxes, to protect from dust and humidity.
  11. pH Paper – A strip of paper that changes color to indicate acidity or alkalinity. They must be kept absolutely dry.

You might be wondering how to deal with humidity in tropical countries. The best way is to store the apparatus or equipment for the school chemistry lab in a closed cupboard and then put silica gel in corners in the cupboard. It will absorb the moisture, keeping the apparatus dry, hence rust and bacteria free.

Definition

The biological safety cabinet filters incoming and outgoing air from the cabinet, which is ventilated. The ventilated cabinet is where the worker places the substance they are working with and continues to process it, preferably wearing additional protective equipment, such as masks, gloves, safety goggles and PPE kits.

  1. HEPA Filters: The filters are fitted with HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filters, which remove incoming air contaminants.
  2. Filtration Efficiency: HEPA filters can theoretically remove at least 99.97% of dust, pollen, mold, bacteria, and airborne particles ≥ 0.3 microns (µm) (USEPA).
  3. Alternative Names: Also known as a laminar flow cabinet or tissue culture hood.
  4. Safe Handling Practices: All procedures should be performed in a way that minimizes aerosol generation and prevents spills.
  5. Aerosol-Generating Procedures

These include:

  • Centrifugation
  • Vortex
  • Sonication
  • Opening containers of infectious materials (with internal pressure different from ambient pressure).
  1. Containment Measures: Such procedures should be performed inside the biological safety cabinet or additional safety measures should be implemented to mitigate risks.

Classes of Biological Safety Cabinets

Biological Safety Cabinet Class 1

The Class I biological safety cabinet has a simple and fundamental design. It provides protection for the operator and the environment by drawing inward airflow that captures aerosols generated during microbiological work. This air then passes through a filtration system, typically consisting of a pre-filter and a HEPA filter, which removes airborne particles and contaminants before being exhausted.

  • User & Environment Protection: Class I cabinets protect the operator but not the sample.
  • Cross-Contamination Risk: Exposure to airborne contaminants may affect experimental accuracy.
  • Limited Applications: Restricted use due to contamination risks.
  • Obsolescence: Largely replaced by Class II cabinets for better protection.

Biological Safety Cabinets Class 2

The Class II Biosafety Cabinet is primarily used for handling pathogenic biological samples or applications requiring a sterile work environment. It is designed with three key protective features:

  1. Inflow air – Protects the operator by preventing exposure to hazardous materials.
  2. ULPA/HEPA-filtered downflow – Maintains an ISO Class 3 clean work surface, preventing cross-contamination and ensuring sample integrity.
  3. ULPA/HEPA-filtered exhaust – Safeguards the environment by filtering outgoing air before release.

These features make Class II cabinets essential in microbiology, pharmaceuticals, and biomedical research. This is the most commonly used biosafety cabinet in schools, colleges and research institutions. To set up a biosafety level 2 cabinet in your organization, go over here.

Biological Safety Cabinets Class 3

Class III biological safety cabinets offer the highest level of containment, surpassing Class I and II cabinets. However, they are much costlier.

  • Construction: Made of welded metal, gas-tight, with glove ports for handling materials.
  • Negative pressure: Maintains negative pressure to enhance containment safety.
  • HEPA filtration: Exhaust air is HEPA-filtered and incinerated for additional safety.
  • Material transfer: Uses a pass-through unit for safe transfer of materials.
  • Air exhaust: Air is typically exhausted back into the lab or through a dedicated duct system to the external environment.
  • Toxic chemical compatibility: Suitable for use with toxic chemicals in addition to microbiological work when connected to dedicated exhaust systems.

Biological Safety Cabinet Uses

Biological safety cabinets (BSCs) are essential in laboratories handling hazardous microorganisms, viruses, and toxic chemicals. They ensure containment and safe processing of materials across different biosafety levels (BSLs).

Biosafety Levels (BSL) Pyramid

Biosafety Levels (BSL) Pyramid

  • BSL-1 & BSL-2: Suitable for handling non-pathogenic and less hazardous bacteria. BSL-2 is preferred when working with non-pathogenic bacteria due to a slightly higher level of containment.
  • BSL-3: Designed for highly pathogenic and dangerous organisms (e.g., Corona, Ebola). Provides a higher level of containment to prevent the spread of infectious agents.
  • Chemical Applications: BSL-3 cabinets are used for handling toxic chemicals, ensuring both biological and chemical safety.
  • Bacterial Handling: Bacteria are typically streaked or processed on Petri plates in BSL-2 or BSL-3 cabinets, depending on their pathogenicity.
  • Viral Applications: Viruses are primarily handled in tissue culture environments, where tissue culture hoods are preferred for safe processing.
  • Plant Tissue Culture: Plant tissue culture work is conducted in BSL-2 cabinets to maintain sterile conditions and prevent contamination of samples and germplasm.
Biosafety cabinets protect the worker. Worker wears PPE kit too.

Guide to Selecting a Telescope for Science Classes https://www.labkafe.com/blog/telescope-for-science-classes/ https://www.labkafe.com/blog/telescope-for-science-classes/#respond Mon, 06 Jan 2025 13:13:54 +0000 https://www.labkafe.com/blog/?p=1414 Find the right telescope for your science classes. This is a complete guide to the right telescope for your school. Browse the different models that are available and choose the one that suits you! What is a telescope? A telescope is an optical device used to observe objects at great distances, such as celestial bodies like stars or planets, or distant terrestrial objects. It collects a large amount of light through the wide aperture of its objective lens, enabling us to view objects that would otherwise remain invisible to the naked eye due to insufficient light collection. Additionally, the eyepiece contains another lens that magnifies the formed image, allowing us to see distant objects clearly. Depending on the type of telescope, this final image may appear inverted. What are the 2 types of telescopes? Telescope optics utilize either lenses or mirrors. Telescopes that rely solely on lenses are known as refracting telescopes, while those incorporating mirrors are referred to as reflecting telescopes.  How are telescopes made? Telescopes use lenses or mirrors to redirect light and create a clear, magnified image of distant objects. Reflecting telescopes use mirrors, while refracting telescopes rely on lenses to focus light. The objective lens or mirror collects as much light as possible from the observed object. This gathered light is then focused by the objective lens or mirror and directed toward the observer’s eyes, producing a clear, magnified image on the retina. Mirrors or Lenses- which is better? Modern telescopes predominantly use mirrors because they address many challenges associated with lenses. Although crafting a perfect mirror is difficult, creating a flawless lens is even more complex. Large lenses are heavy, making them hard to maneuver and maintain in the correct position. As lenses increase in size, they become thicker, reducing the amount of light that passes through. Additionally, lenses must have perfectly smooth surfaces on both sides, as any imperfections distort the image. Mirrors, on the other hand, are lighter for their size and require only a single surface to be smooth and reflective. They are easier to clean and polish, and large mirrors only need the correct curvature for optimal performance. Although mirrors produce an inverted image, this can be corrected with an additional mirror. Most space telescopes, such as the Hubble Space Telescope, the Spitzer Space Telescope, and the James Webb Space Telescope, use mirrors because they are lightweight and efficient.
